Fall 2020 KCA Virtual Meeting on Emergency Planning

Friday November 20: 10:30 am – 12pm ET

This remote learning workshop will combine two pre-recorded lessons to help you get started — or keep going — on your institutional disaster planning and emergency preparedness efforts, with a live scenario session where you’ll discuss with your colleagues how you can best respond in an emergency.

Asynchronous (pre-recorded) lessons (30 minutes each):

1. Emergency Preparedness Basics
a. The Emergency Management Cycle
b. What is a Disaster Plan
c. Readings and resources
d. Writing a Plan Jumpstart

2. Building Community for Resilience
a. How can community help?
b. Who do you need? Who needs you?
c. Ideas for starting and maintaining a cohort

**Pre-recorded content will be sent out in advance to view on your own time. Viewing of pre-recorded content is helpful to view but not required to participate in the live training**

Live Scenario Training (15 minutes, 5 minutes for Q&A for each scenario)

Participants will discuss the scenarios in break-out rooms, and come together at the end for a wrap-up discussion. 

Facilitator bio:
Frances Harrell is an independent archives professional with over ten years of experience working with cultural heritage organizations, and will serve as the consultant for this project. She has spent the larger part of her career helping libraries, archives, and museums achieve their preservation goals through consulting and training in paper, photograph, audiovisual, digital collections, and disaster training. She was the project lead on the recently developed Digital Assessment Training Program: Building a Framework, Building a Community, funded by the NEH, and served on the project team for the Performing Arts Readiness (PARS) project. She has served the preservation field in many professional leadership roles, including as Co-Chair of ALA’s Preservation Outreach Committee, Co-Chair of ALA’s Digital Preservation Interest Group, and Chair of SAA’s Preservation Section. Frances received her MLIS with a focus in Archives Management at Simmons College and her BA in English Literature from the University of Florida.
