Documenting Crisis: A Day of Learning and Service
Join KCA for a day focused on the challenges and opportunities of rapid response collecting in the midst of difficult events. As professionals, we work to collect materials that are both relevant and representative, but what does it mean to collect in the now? How do we navigate the barriers we may encounter? And in the midst of tragedy, how do we respond to our communities with compassion? Northern Illinois University’s Cindy Ditzler will join us remotely to help unpack these questions as she shares a bit about her institution’s February 14, 2008 Memorial Collection. As keepers of NIU’s history, the university archives and special collections staff recognized their responsibility to document even the most difficult campus events, including this 2008 shooting. Join us as we learn how they launched their project and harnessed the collection to be an avenue of healing and active collecting. Following discussion, participants will have an opportunity to lend their expertise and hands to the Marshall County High School shooting memorial collection.
